About
I do applied sociology for a cooperative economy. Over the past 12 years, I've trained 200 first-time researchers across 30 participatory studies, and built applied research programs within organizations ranging from arts & culture to finance and software. I'm interested in worker voice, power, and ownership, cooperative economics, personal narratives in software, resisting cultural assimilation, and community research methods. My current role is at UC Berkeley, editing and contributing to a study about how worker ownership can create quality jobs in historically low-wage sectors, such as construction, farming, healthcare, and retail. Before that, I facilitated worker-led research with a staffing and training co-op based in Oakland, California. I'm also a co-founder of The Workers' Algorithm Observatory at Princeton University, a clinic that helps groups of workers audit black-box algorithms and AI systems, providing explanations that they can use to hold businesses accountable and to push for better systems.
