"I have heard an old maestro of the guitar say, 'The duende is not in the throat, it climbs up inside you, from the soles of the feet.'" Federico Garcia Lorca goes on to describe duende as a 'mysterious power which everyone senses and no philosopher explains' in regards to art and music. So, what is duende and why does it matter? And how does it fit in here, on my LinkedIn page? John Berger in his book "Ways of Seeing" talked about semiotics and explained this mysterious power that art and visual stimuli, duende, has to move us. We tend to think of language as only including what we can say and define with words. But our first responses and reactions to what we see are word blind. Semiotics, the study of the language of signs and symbols, helps us to understand our knee jerk responses to things. What do we associate with certain colors, shapes and textures? Why do we enjoy some environments and not others? There's a lot of psychology that successful artists and makers employ. In order to build, run, and create things and experiences, we consider every last piece of what making things really is.
