About

I’ve spent my career working on media, technology, and societal conundrums. I am fascinated by: - Media and community in all their forms; - Technology and its many ripple effects; - Philanthropy and funding models; - Emerging psychological, cognitive, and spiritual paradigms. My writing has appeared in Harvard Business Review, The Atlantic, Vice's tech publication Motherboard, and other publications. I've spoken at Stanford, U. C. Berkeley, University of Chicago, and other universities, as well as museums like Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, and conferences like SXSW. In 2019 I launched a magazine called "The New Modality," exploring how to create a meaningful life in this rapidly changing world. The magazine was a Kickstarter hit and has been dubbed a "Bay Area cult classic." I occasionally take on contract work with innovative companies, think tanks, and research firms. I'm also on Substack: lydialaurenson.substack.com Here are highlights from past projects: Managing Editor, The Battery Magazine. — 2017-2019 — In 2017, The Battery — a social club in San Francisco devoted to arts, culture, and philanthropy — created a magazine for its members. I commissioned, edited, and/or wrote all articles for Issues 1-5. Each issue was 96-112 pages with no ads. Policy Briefs about Polarization and Peacebuilding on Digital Media, for the Toda Peace Institute. — 2019 — I researched and wrote two 7,000-word policy briefs about the social impact of social media, and governance approaches. Director of Strategy & Research, News Deeply. — 2015-2016 — News Deeply was an award-winning, cutting-edge geopolitical journalism company. I developed ND’s community and social product strategy. I oversaw partnerships and created ND’s user research program, working with influential readers across academia, government, and think tanks. My Year In San Francisco’s $2 Million Secret Society Startup, Vice Motherboard. — 2016 — I documented the rise and fall of an art project that was also a tech startup that was also a secret society. eSwatini HIV Program, US Peace Corps. — 2009-2010 — I served as a public health volunteer in the Peace Corps. I was posted to eSwatini, a country in sub-Saharan Africa with the highest HIV rate in the world. (NB: Before 2018, eSwatini was called by the name "Swaziland.") Game Designer and Writer, White Wolf Game Studio. — 2005-2008 — I contributed to or edited ten books across White Wolf’s legendary roleplaying games. My main focus was Exalted, a mythic action-adventure game about the challenges of heroism.

The New Modality is a publication and community that seeks answers to the question: “What is a meaningful life in this rapidly changing world?” This is a question of culture, economics, governance, and beyond, because change is occurring at all levels: the individual, family, community, city, nation, and worldwide.

Researcher and Consultant on the Impact of Digital/ Social MediaIndependent Basic company page — company details not listed yet
Mar 2018

In 2018, I did a lot of consulting about the impact of digital media on society. I was especially interested in polarization. I also got interested in broader digital media governance issues, and in peacebuilding on digital media. (“Peacebuilding” is a term of art, describing a process that facilitates the establishment of durable peace.) My research has been distilled in two policy briefs commissioned by the Toda Peace Institute, a Japanese organization (Part 1 is linked below). I've also spoken, presented, and advised organizations on this process, and been part of the international governance process; e.g., my research supported the Senate testimony given by one of my clients.

After working with News Deeply for a year and a half, I transitioned into an advisor and consultant for the company, with much love all around.
